There
are many ways that you can help preserve
our global peatlands. The first step is to
reduce/limit the use of peat in your
gardens. You can do this by first being
aware of what products are most likely to
use peat ingredients. Many retail products
are not clearly labeled, and most
gardeners are not even aware they are
purchasing peat based products. The
majority of peat can be found in most
seeding and potting mixes, as well as
seedling flats, and potted plants sold at
garden stores. You will also find an
abundance of peat products in the form of
peat pots, and peat pellets.
The
next step is to seek alternatives to these
peat products. There are several products
on the market available that provide the
same quality results as peat, at a similar
cost. One of these is Fiber Grow products
from Planters’ Pride. Fiber Grow is made
from coir, a highly renewable resource.
They offer all the benefits of peat
without the harmful effects on the
environment. In addition coir has the
capacity to absorb more water, and retain
it for longer periods than peat products.
This allows you to continue actively
gardening without worrying you are harming
the environment. Coir also becomes a great
additive to your gardens soil. Not only
will it biodegrade over time, but it also
allows more air into the soil – great
for growing roots. The mesh liner on Fiber
Grow pellets is also made from natural
ingredients, allowing it to break down
into the soil unlike other comparable
growing pellets.
By
limiting your use of peat products in your
garden you are doing your part in
conserving our global peat lands and the
environment.
